Middle School

The Curriculum

The Middle Years programme model is holistic in that it develops the positive character attributes of the learner profile within an aligned structure of eight subject groups and disciplines.

  • Student-centered learning ensures the students are supported by teaching and learning approaches which require students to inquire into and explore ideas on a global scale.
  • Focus on developing ideas which drives students to deepen their understanding of various disciplines, which push students to demonstrate high levels of thinking beyond fact or topics.
  • Personal project in Grade 10 to demonstrate understanding and skills obtained and developed throughout the programme.

The primary aim of the programme is the development of international-mindedness in our students supported by programmes to teach them how to learn, so that they are prepared to actively engage with and contribute to the wider world.

Approaches to Learning (ATL)

ATL skills help students “learn how to be and how to learn” , develop study habits and find out about themselves as learners so that they can develop skills for learning independently and with others to enjoy a lifetime of learning.

Global Contexts

The MYP programme involves understanding concepts in context. This provides students with a common language for powerful contextual learning and identifies specific settings, events or circumstances that provide more concrete perspectives for teaching and learning. When teachers select a global context for learning, students will answer the following questions:

  • Why are we engaged in this inquiry?
  • Why are these concepts important?
  • Why is it important for me to understand?
  • Why do people care about this topic?

MYP global contexts provide common points of entry for inquiries into what it means to be internationally minded, framing a curriculum that promotes multilingualism, intercultural understanding and global engagement.

All MYP students will study eight different subjects:

Language and Literature

Study of both language mechanics and literature. Students undertake language that is their most accomplished language. Students may be placed by School in either English Language and Literature, Indonesian Language and Literature, or Korean Language and Literature.

Design

MYP Design provides the means and the context to help student become skillful problem solvers who can appreciate the role of technology in everyday life and who can respond critically and resourcefully to real-life challenges in both digital and product design.

Arts

MYP Arts values the process of creating artworks as much as the finished product. Arts provides students with the opportunity to obtain essential 21st century skills, critical and creative thinking. MYP Arts consists of Drama, Music and Visual Arts.

Sciences

Culminating Project

Personal Project: The personal project is a significant body of work produced over an extended period and is a product of the student’s own initiative. It reflects the student’s experience of the programme and provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly creative piece of work of their choice and to demonstrate the skills they have developed through approaches to learning.
