BUZZ MUN (Model United Nations)

BUZZ MUN (Model United Nations)

Model United Nations are academic and scholarly-based conferences that students partake in all over the world to dissect real-world problems and diplomatically solve them to promote peace. BINUS SCHOOL Simprug has consistently been involved in MUN and earlier this year, on October 14-15, we hosted our first-ever onsite Model United Nations Conference. We called it BUZZ MUN, after our mascot: the bee. Our theme was “Bridging the Humanitarian Gap”. We thought this was especially fitting after the unforgiving era of COVID-19 and all of the devastating impacts it reaped on our society. It worsened various existing inequalities and brought on new inequalities that the world desperately needs to solve. Opening speech delivered by the Secretary Generals. The event itself was a huge success. We invited students from selected schools to partake in the conference and bring together different perspectives to foster and empower our society to build and serve the nation. 8 different schools from all over Indonesia and over 60 students participated in the conference. Throughout the duration of the conference, delegates engaged with one another in debates and discussions and displayed their excellent critical thinking skills, and honed their abilities to collaborate, communicate, and present.  Specific topics from 3 wide-ranging councils were discussed. The United Nations Human Rights Council, World Health Organization, and International Court of Justice. The UNHRC Council explored the refugee crisis that has arisen from the devastating war in Ukraine while the WHO Council discussed the fast-approaching threat of Monkeypox and how countries should equip themselves to prevent another grisly global crisis. The ICJ Council broke down the issue of systematic racism by simulating the court case of Zimmerman and Martin. Each council fostered intellectual discussion and produced fruitful results. Live moment from the ICJ council; Prosecutor delivering her statements to the judging panel. Live moment from the WHO council; Delegates gearing up for their speeches. Through this event, BINUS SCHOOL Simprug once again reiterated the importance of making good on the promise put forth by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals to leave no one behind. Through BUZZ Model United Nations, we were able to put an emphasis on how pinpointing the root causes of crises, building resilience, and preventing risks would help the world move from delivering aid to ending need. Awarding ceremony for the UNHRC council. Message from the Secretary-General: “All in all, this conference was a great learning experience and I truly hope that BUZZ MUN will eventually become a prestigious annual event hosted by our school that other schools from all over Indonesia look forward to participating in. I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to BINUS Simprug and its teachers for their support and for giving me the opportunity to pioneer such a renowned event like this. I would also like to give my thanks to my incredibly hard-working committee. Being BINUS SCHOOL Simprug’s first Secretary-General has been an honor.” Tanvi Sureka, Class of 2024 BUZZ MUN 2022: The Secretariat

Changemakers Fest 2022

Changemakers Fest 2022

Changemakers Fest is an event in line with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) hosted annually at Binus School Simprug for all PYP, MYP, and DP students, ranging from grades 1 to 11.“. This year's theme was “Act locally and Impact globally” as we believe that our small or big actions matter to make the world a better place.” stated Ms. Elisabeth, a member of this year’s organizing committee.  Organization representatives as well as parents, teachers, and alumni are invited to share their actions in order to inspire Binusians to take action and make an impact in their own community for a cause they are passionate about. “As a follow-up, each grade level is encouraged to discuss action plans towards a goal determined by them”, continued Ms.Elisabeth.  Grade 8 students engaged in a presentation followed by a workshop hosted by Sebumi, a local organization promoting sustainability and conservation through education and providing people with the opportunity to travel to national parks and forest reserves to develop an appreciation for nature.  The students were invited to create sustainable fashion through a method called eco-print pounding. The students were split into groups within their classes and given cloth, a laminating sheet, and a pounder. Using plants brought from home, the students created their own patterns within the cloth as shown in the image gallery. Linked to this article are short testimonies given by a few grade 8 students who would like to share their experiences of participating in this event.                       Interview 1                    Interview 2                   Interview 3 Students from multiple grade levels have also expressed how the event has encouraged them to take action in their local community and we look forward to upcoming projects through which Binusians shall act locally and impact globally.
