BINUS SCHOOL Simprug Teen Aiders: Honing Sense of Respectable Youth and Unity

How can Teen Aiders Club help students shape a high sense of solidarity and respectable youth? As a students’ club at BINUS SCHOOL Simprug that focuses on volunteering activities in humanitarian aid, it has been actively organising and participating in various related events.
The club has recently joined a large-scale event, Jumbara 2024, gathering the Youth Red Cross (Palang Merah Remaja) around South Jakarta, organised by PMI (Palang Merah Indonesia or Indonesian Red Cross). During 2 days, from October 18 to 20, our students experience fruitful opportunities to implement skills while building their network.
Let’s ramp up to a brief picture of how this event helped them shape their characters in this discussion!
JUMBARA 2024: Introducing Practical Skills and Solidarity
This year is not the first time PMI has organised this incredible event that calls for PMI and PMR across the region.
The event’s name stands for Jumpa (meeting), Bakti (serving), and Gembira (having fun), which hint at the objective of JUMBARA itself.
Broadly speaking, this event manifests one of PMI’s mandates about volunteer development through diverse kinds of activities that help students learn practical first-aid knowledge in various scenarios.
Furthermore, JUMBARA 2024, which took place in Bumi Perkemahan Apriari Ragunan, Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, specifically facilitated the development of their social skills.
What Our Teen Aiders Experienced During the Camps?
Through this annual event, participants join the get-together, sharing information, knowledge, and experience through various fun and nurturing activities and programs. The program for Youth Red Cross in Jumbara 2024 includes seven key subjects as follows.
- First aid,
- Red Cross Leadership,
- Health and Sanitation,
- Healthy Teenagers,
- Peduli Sesama (humanitarian service),
- Blood Donation, and
- Ayo Siaga Bencara (Disaster preparedness training).
All of the subjects were divided during the 3-day camps. Yet, the highlight happened during the first day, on October 18. It was the moment when the PMI secretary, Drs. Sunardi inaugurated around 7,000 Youth Red Cross recruits from various quarters of South Jakarta, including the Teen Aiders from BINUS SCHOOL Simprug.
Meanwhile, during the second day, our Teen Aiders, along with their comrades, participated in various competitions and got the chance to get to know their comrades better. The competition was divided into 16 contests, encompassing the concept of knowledge sharing and social solidarity.
Following those fun activities, Teen Aiders of BINUS SCHOOL Simprug were also exposed to a deeper knowledge of first aid, disaster preparedness, and healthy teenagers topics. They had workshops and training on fire extinguishers, organisational identity guidelines, and understanding the danger of narcotics on the second day of camp.
Furthermore, participants had the opportunity to serve the community by cleaning their camp surroundings together. PMI also organised a visit to a nursing home and taught students how to take care of the elderly.
The event wrapped up with a prize and rewards distribution, which became a memorable closure for the whole experience the students had undergone.
5 Key Benefits Teen Aiders Gained through JUMBARA 2024
The whole program and activities organised during JUMBARA allowed participants to better understand the concept of solidarity and unity through the humanitarian service concept. Following are the benefits of participating in JUMBARA.
1. Learn how to respond effectively
Some of the workshops and competitions were designed to simulate an emergency. Through this approach, they learned how to respond and neutralise the situation with first aid.
2. Develop leadership skills
Correspondingly, the activities also demanded the participants’ teamwork and collaboration to tackle hurdles, as well as mental resilience while handling a given situation.
3. Expand their networking
Since the participants came from various schools in South Jakarta, Teen Aiders of BINUS SCHOOL Simprug also got a chance to make new friends with like-minded peers. Even though the amount of time was relatively short, the camps might facilitate them to strengthen their kinship as part of the Indonesian Youth Red Cross as well.
4. Nurture a sense of social responsibility
The visit to a nursing home was an occasion to train Teen Aider’s empathy and sense of social responsibility while equipping them with practical knowledge of a caretaker.
5. Hone creative skills
While doing the competitions, students need to work on their creativity in implementing what they learn and develop solutions. Hence, it accommodates them to increase their creativity.
While it was not the first time our Teen Aider got in touch with PMI, the three-day camps of JUMBARA 2024 allowed the Teen Aiders to enrich their experience in the field. As mentioned earlier, the event helped them become more respectable youth and understand the importance of unity in the community.
