An international-level mathematics competition, the World Mathematics Invitational (WMI), was once again held at BINUS SCHOOL Serpong, South Tangerang, on Saturday (01/04). This year, BINUS SCHOOL Serpong is one of the hosts for the Tangerang and surrounding areas.

Thousands of participants from various schools from kindergarten to high school throughout Indonesia will participate in this competition. After passing the preliminary round, participants who win gold, silver, and bronze medals will have the opportunity to compete with participants from other countries such as America, China, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Macao, Iran, Bulgaria, India, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Myanmar, Australia, Brazil, Turkey, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Laos at the WMI Final. This year, the WMI Final will be held in South Korea in July 2023.

Principal of Middle and High School BINUS SCHOOL Serpong, Ms. Sherrierose Garcia Gonzales, said that the WMI qualification event is an opportunity for students to develop their interests and talents, as well as to show their abilities in mathematics, especially since mathematics is the basis of many sciences.

A total of 642 students from 22 schools in the Tangerang area and surrounding areas participated in the WMI preliminary round at BINUS SCHOOL Serpong this year. “Through events like this, students are encouraged to hone their mathematical skills,” explained Ms. Sherrie.

Ms. Sherrie added that this is the second time BINUS SCHOOL Serpong has hosted the WMI preliminary round. The difference is that last year the WMI preliminary round was still held online, while this year it has returned to onsite. The number of participants this year has increased by more than 200 compared to last year.

Meanwhile, the Principal of Early Childhood Years & Elementary BINUS SCHOOL Serpong, Ms. Anwin Samsudi, added that this competition also provides a great opportunity for students in Indonesia, so that it can be a trigger for them to be more enthusiastic and creative in delving into the field of mathematics.

“We see a very high enthusiasm from the participants in following this competition, especially since this competition is a prestigious world-class event. Therefore, we strongly support young talents who have dared to explore this competition,” said Ms. Anwin.

WMI is an international mathematics competition that was first initiated by Taiwan to gather institutions and organizations around the world that want to popularize the field of mathematics.

Participants of WMI will not only compete at the national and world levels, but the students who participate also have the opportunity to explore new horizons, especially in gaining new experiences and cultures among fellow math lovers.
