Course Structure of History in the DP
The program offers a comparative and multi-perspective approach to history, focusing on key historical concepts. The course is structured into four core components: Prescribed Subjects, World History Topics, Higher Level (HL) Depth Studies, and the Internal Assessment (IA). Each section is designed to help students analyse history from different angles and scales local, regional, and global. Students will learn various history types, such as economic, political, cultural, and social, which encourage students to explore and understand multiple past events. The course offered four types of materials to study, as follows:
-
Prescribed Subjects (Standard Level & Higher Level)
This section discusses various topics that focus on the analysis and critical evaluation of a source. The subjects learned may vary but often include military leaders, conquest and its impact, the move to global war, rights and protest, and conflict and intervention.
-
World History Topics (Standard Level & Higher Level)
This section explores the history of different regions and periods to allow a comparative approach.
The subjects studied may include Society and Economy in the 750s-1400s, Causes and Effects of War in the 750s-1500s, Dynasties and Rulers in the 750s-1500s, Societies in Transition in the 1400s-1700s, Early Modern States in the 1450s-1789s, Causes and Effects of Early Modern Wars in the 1500s-1750s, and many more.
-
Higher Level (HL) Depth Studies
This section is only available to Higher Level students and discusses a more specific region. For example, the History of Africa and the Middle East, the History of the Americas, the History of Asia and Oceania, and the History of Europe. This section helps students to develop specialized knowledge that further empowers their analytical skills.
-
Internal Assessment (IA)
Lastly, the Internal Assessment is a crucial part of the course for SL and HL students. This is an independent research project where students explore a topic they are interested in within history. Students conduct a historical investigation, where they analyze various sources, and come up with a balanced conclusion.
This project will help develop research skills and provide students with an opportunity to work on a topic they are most passionate about.

Once you read the assigned reading materials, you must learn the historical context of the events. This can include knowledge of economic, social, and political conditions during the historical events.

Assessment and Exams
The History in the DP is graded on a scale of 1-7, with 7 being the highest grade. The grade is combined with the results of both external and internal assessments. The grading system is different between Standard Level and Higher Lever.
For Standard Level (SL), the assessment consists of three parts. Paper 1, a source-based paper lasting 1 hour, contributes 30% to the overall grade. Paper 2 is an essay-based paper lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes, and makes up 45% of the total grade.
Lastly, the remaining 25% is accounted for by an Internal Assessment (IA), a 1,500-word historical investigation.
The structure for Higher Level (HL) is slightly different. Paper 1, the one-hour source-based paper, contributes 20% of the final grade, while Paper 2, also essay-based and lasting one hour and thirty minutes, accounts for 25%. In addition, HL students complete Paper 3, an extended essay-based paper lasting two hours and thirty minutes, which contributes 20% to the final score.
The Internal Assessment at this level is a more extensive 2,200-word historical investigation, carrying 20% of the final grade.
