Structure of the IB Dance Programme

The programme’s flexible structure allows students to study dance as part of Group 6 (the arts) in the IB Diploma Programme or to select an additional subject from Groups 1 to 5. 

In the IBDP, students would take at least three but no more than four Higher Level subjects, each carrying a recommendation for a total instructional time of 240 hours; the remaining course(s), when needed, would be at the Standard Level, the core of which is a recommended 150 hours of instruction.

  • Standard Level (SL)

For students who have a general interest in dance, the SL track provides a structured yet flexible study plan:

  • Composition and Analysis Students spend extensive periods of time, normally exceeding 60 hours, developing their creative dance-making skills, such as choreography, and analyzing the decisions they make to create new works.
  • World Dance Studies: 30 hours of a comparative study of styles to widen students’ understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity in dance.
  • Performance: An additional 60 hours are spent on mastering technical and interpretive skills to perform the work. This will help students acquire confidence and poise in their movements.
  • Higher Level (HL)

For the more committed dancers, there exists a specialist route to Higher Level, taking in-depth students through the course:

  • Composition and Analysis: HL students are allowed 90 hours to develop creative skills and refine their works by studying movement languages, choreographic structures, and artistic choices.
  • World Dance Studies: Students at HL compare over 60 hours of dance traditions of several cultures to further enhance their appreciation for dance as an international art.
  • Performance: HL students receive 90 hours of performance practice. This provides substantial training in developing technical and expressive skills to the highest possible level, preparing students for various advanced performance contexts.
