What is SASMO?

Math minds are already familiar with this recognisable math competition. SASMO actually stands for Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad. It was first organised in 2006 in Singapore with 155 local participants. This math competition has rapidly gained popularity, increasing the number of participants and countries of origin since then, and has become one of the largest math competitions in Asia.

It is designed to challenge students with non-routine problems that go beyond what is taught in school curricula. With the support of the Advisory Council, the SASMO team designed it to cover both Olympiad and school maths. Each requires critical thinking, logical reasoning, and a deeper application of math concepts that will challenge their high-order thinking skills, yet in a realistic way.

SASMO caters to bright young minds across various grade levels. Students from grades 1 to 12 can take the contest at their level, offering them an opportunity to test and hone their math skills in a competitive yet supportive environment.

Participating in SASMO offers numerous benefits, including academic enrichment through mathematical intuition, the development of strong problem-solving skills, critical reasoning, and a logical approach, combined with creative skills. These skills can help them understand school maths more smoothly, while serving as stepping stones for more advanced maths Olympiads and future academic pursuits.

A Gathering of Young Math Talents

The SASMO 2025 event at BINUS SCHOOL Simprug witnessed an inspiring turnout of students from over 60 schools across the region. As the competition unfolded, the atmosphere was filled with the focused energy and enthusiasm of young maths minds eager to engage with challenging problems.

Kimmy, a Grade 1 student from Sampoerna Academy, shared her first-time experience, advising, “If you’re doing SASMO, you have to practice a lot. ”

Winston and Joshua, Grade 7 students from Sekolah Pelita Harapan, highlighted the competition’s demanding yet beneficial nature. Joshua noted, “According to my experience, it’s pretty challenging, it helps your mind to think and do problem solving.”

While Winston added, “In my opinion, as a person who has been in many math competitions, keep practising and participating in math competitions, it will eventually get easier.”

This gathering showcased a vibrant community of learners, where they can certainly receive internal recognition certificates, medals, and rankings. But, above and beyond that, their sole participation adds value as they demonstrate initiative, academic challenge-seeking behaviour, and achievement in international competitions. These key aspects show academic rigour and commitment to personal growth in STEM fields.

Successfully hosting participants from SASMO 2025 at 60 schools across Asia highlights BINUS SCHOOL Simprug’s commitment to nurturing young math and science talent. This caters to our vision in helping students discover new horizons that were once unimaginable.
